Meet your farmer!
Jason (middle) is a born-and-raised Siskiyou County guy, and he's been raising chickens since he was a kid. He grew up on a ranch, and his first chore was, as you can probably guess, gathering the eggs.
He went on to raise 4H pigs, rabbits, and cows, and he stuck to it. Now he, his mom, Sandy, and his son Noah have approximately 260 chickens that provide the delicious eggs you can get weekly in our market. His hens, who provide around 190 eggs A DAY, lay for about two years before the flock is replenished with new layers, and another 100 new chicks are on their way right now - those ladies should be ready to lay by next May, just in time for our 2018 market.
A good, free-range egg has a nice hard shell and a dark orange yolk, and you can clearly tell he takes great care of his hens. If you like eggs, these are top notch. They're so good they sell out every single week.
Jason and his family started selling eggs at the market in 2016, making this their second year - in fact, you can ONLY get their eggs at our market, or at their farm stand in Gazelle, though they'll be participating in a winter farmer distribution later this year too (more on that soon).
They plan to be here through the end of our 2017 market, so stop by for a dozen delicious eggs this next week and say hello to Sandy, Jason and Noah, a three-generation-plus Siskiyou farming family. Shasta View's eggs pair well with Running Rabbit Mills' stoneground wheat flour for some great fall baking, or with Dave's Salt & Savour sauerkraut and Lava Oasis' microgreens for a delicious, wholesome breakfast.
See you Monday!
